How to Make Chocolate Frosting
  1. Begin by placing the unsalted butter and unsweetened cocoa powder in a mixing bowl. Use a hand mixer to blend them together until the mixture is smooth and well-combined, about 1-2 minutes.
  2. Gradually sprinkle in the powdered sugar while mixing on low speed. Scrape down the sides of the bowl as needed.
  3. Pour in the heavy cream and vanilla extract. Mix on low speed until just combined, then increase the speed momentarily.
  4. Raise the mixer speed to medium-high and continue to beat the frosting for about 2-3 minutes.
  5. Use immediately to frost cakes or cupcakes, spreading generously.
